DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Embry-Riddle had three individuals named to the Capital One College Division Academic All-American men's at-large team, as the tennis trio of
Chris Freeman,
Simon Felix and
Patrick Besch were honored on Monday. The Capital One Academic All-America College Division men's at-large team was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America and was comprised of student-athletes from NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions in the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo, volleyball and wrestling.
Monday's honor was one of many in 2012 for Freeman who garnered first team honors. Freeman anchored the top spot in the ERAU singles lineup in 2012, posting a team-best 23-9 overall record. After winning the USTA/ITA Florida Regional last October, Freeman went on to become only the second player in ERAU men's tennis history to claim a national title, winning the ITA/NAIA National Championship. Named The Sun Conference Player of the Year for the second straight season, Freeman ranked second in the ITA/NAIA national singles poll and 10th in the national doubles poll in tandem with freshman
J.R. Leonik. He also got the job done in the classroom and his 3.647 grade point average in Aeronautical Science earned him Academic All-Conference and NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete in addition to the CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition.
Felix was also named to the first team. A native of Geneva, Switzerland, he earned the second NAIA second-team nod of his career. He was recognized as the National Player of the Week by the NAIA on Mar. 12 and garnered conference Player of the Week honors on three occasions. The sophomore partnered with
Peter Francis for a 23-5 doubles record and No. 20 national doubles ranking. One of only two Eagle players to go 6-0 in league, he was a first team All-Conference selection for the second straight year and his 22-5 overall record placed him at No. 15 in the national singles ranking. A 3.73 student majoring in Air Traffic Management, he was also named to the Academic All-Conference team and was the league's Champions of Character Award winner.
Rounding out the list of ERAU honorees was Besch who was named to the second team. In his second season with the Blue and Gold, Besch played all but one of his singles matches at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. His 13-6 singles record helped him to the No. 9 spot in the national singles rankings, but he and
Adrian Bayh occupied the top spot in the national doubles poll for the entire season after winning the ITA/NAIA National Doubles crown and turning in a 24-5 doubles ledger. Besch was selected to the All-Sun Conference first team and like Freeman and Felix, he earned Academic All-Conference honors thanks to his 3.60 GPA in Business Administration.
