Embry-Riddle's E. William Crotty Tennis Complex
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – For the fifth consecutive year, the E. William Crotty Tennis Complex will be the site of the ERAU Tennis Open. The three-day ERAU Open will feature student-athletes representing six schools from NCAA I, NCAA II and the NAIA, including Bethune-Cookman, Florida Southern, Rollins and Embry-Riddle.
The ERAU Open is the first competition of the 2012-13 season for the Embry-Riddle men's and women's teams who continued their success last season. The ERAU men's team went undefeated in conference play for the eighth straight year, winning The Sun Conference regular season and tournament titles before losing to No. 3 Oklahoma Christian in the NAIA National Tournament semifinals. The Blue and Gold finished as the third-ranked team in the nation and closed out the 2012 season with a 20-4 overall record.
ERAU returns five student-athletes from last year's squad, including four of the top six singles players. Leading the way is senior
Chris Freeman who was tabbed as The Sun Conference Player of the Year for the second straight season and became only the second player in ERAU men's tennis history to claim a national title, winning the ITA/NAIA National Championship in the fall.
The Eagle women are coming off their most successful season in program history and will be led by junior
Kristina Marova, who received NAIA All-America honorable mention honors last season. The Blue and Gold will look to replace The Sun Conference Player of the Year
Yi Ching Chen and three ITA/NAIA All America award winners in Ekaterina Kamdendova,
Rocio Frej Vitalle and
Josefine Strom. The Embry-Riddle women's team ended the season as the NAIA National Championship Runner-up, losing 5-2 to Auburn Montgomery (Ala.). The Eagles set a program record for single-season wins with their 23-4 record and also went undefeated in league play on the way to The Sun Conference regular season and tournament titles for the second year in a row.
Play begins at 8:30 a.m. on Friday.
