DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle tennis team got their 2012-13 season underway on Friday at the E. William Crotty Tennis Complex. The men's and women's tennis teams took part in the four-team ERAU Tennis Open which runs through Sunday.
On the men's side, Eagles
Chris Freeman and
Patrick Besch each got a win in the gold flight while
Simon Felix and
David Spennare each own their matches in the blue flight. Jose Suger got a win for the Blue and Gold in the Eagle flight to cap the singles competition on day one. Rollins, which finished eighth in NCAA Division II last season won three matches, while last season's NCAA Division II 24
th-ranked Florida Southern won six matches.
In doubles action, Embry-Riddle got a victory from the team of Felix and Besch while Freeman and Leonik fell to Rollins top doubles team of Christensen and DiFelice. The Tars also managed another victory in the blue flight. Florida Southern tallied two match wins and Bethune-Cookman got its first match win on the men's side in the gold flight.
On the women's side, Eagles Hui-l Huang got the teams' lone win over Bethune-Cookman's Shereen Peterson-Paul (6-2, 6-2). Rollins won seven matches across the four flights, Florida Southern won six matches, while Bethune-Cookman won one match.
Huang got another match win in doubles play while teamed with
Kristina Marova. Rollins won four of the seven matches and Florida Southern won the remaining two.
The Eagles are facing stiff competition in preparation for the USTA/ITA Florida Regional, which is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 27 through Sunday, Sept. 30 and is the first sanctioned tournament for Embry-Riddle.
Action continues on Saturday, with the first round of singles matches getting underway at 8:30 a.m.
