DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle tennis team continued to show improvement on the third day of the ERAU Open on Sunday at the E. William Crotty Tennis Complex.
In men's singles,
Chris Freeman improved to 3-0 and was the only player to not lose a set in the gold flight, defeating Florida Southern's Emanuel Lueber, 6-2, 7-5. FSC's Nathan Levitt remained undefeated in the blue flight, while the Eagles
David Spennare improved to 2-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory. The Mocs Vladimir Barabash was the lone unbeaten in the white flight, going 3-0. In the eagle flight, Rollins' Tony D'Angelo defeated Jose Suger (ERAU) in straight sets to improve to 2-0, with Suger falling to 2-1.
In doubles gold flight action, Bethune-Cookmen's Seve Day and Juan Varon, as well as Florida Southern's Benoit Paradis and Lueber each moved to 3-0 for the Open, with 8-4 victories. In the blue flight, the Florida Southern pair of Carl Lundberg and Austin Commings finished the Open with a 3-0 record, defeating Rollins' Keegan Burger and Henning Ander, 9-8 (8).
On the women's side, Sabine Goge matched Freeman's performance in not dropping a set in the gold flight, going 3-0. The Blue and Gold's
Kristina Marova got her first win of 2012, defeating Bethune-Cookman's Shereen Peterson-Paul; 6-3, 7-5. Joalis Dominguez (FSC) topped Lisa Loft (RC) to improve to 3-0 and
Giovanna Tomiotto (ERAU) got her second straight win in the blue flight. Rollins' Carli Davis and the Mocs Laura Wichmann squared off in the white flight with Davis coming away with the 7-5, 6-3 victory to finish the Open 3-0. Emma Wookey finished the eagle flight 3-0 while the Eagles
Meena Bennett defeated Angie Crowley (RC) to earn her second victory.
In doubles play, the Mocs team of Goge and Magda Riutort won their third match in the gold flight, defeating the Eagles pair of Christina Huang and Marova 9-8 (4), to remain the lone undefeated team. The blue flight finished with two without a loss as Rollin's pair of Marianna Salvador and Wookey finished the Open 2-0 and the Tars other doubles team of Callie Whitlock and Davis finished 3-0.
The Eagles return to the court on Thursday, Sept. 27, as Embry-Riddle plays host to the USTA/ITA Regional Championships. Matches will be held Sept. 27-30 at the E. William Crotty Tennis Complex.
