Freeman and Nelson Claim Sun Conference Weekly Awards

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Sun Conference announced its' weekly award winners on Monday afternoon with a pair of Embry-Riddle student-athletes earning weekly honors. Chris Freeman (men's tennis) and Stetson Nelson (baseball pitcher) took home their respective sport awards for the Eagles.

Freeman played at the top singles spot in both of the Eagles' matches, leading his team to a pair of wins during the week. Against NCAA II No. 22 Florida Southern, Freeman teamed up with J.R. Leonik for an 8-4 win over Emanuel Lueber and Benoit Paradis at the top doubles spot. He then topped NCAA II 34th-ranked Lueber 6-3, 7-5 in singles as the Eagles topped FSC 9-0. Freeman and Leonik played at No. 2 doubles against NCAA II No. 13 Valdosta State and downed Sebastian Javsyk and Tammo Haake 8-1. He then pulled out a tough three-set win in singles, holding off 11th-ranked Konstantin Kutschenko 1-6, 7-6 (3), 13-11 to lead ERAU to an 8-1 victory over the Blazers.

The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team has a pair of home matches slated for this week. The Eagles will host Rollins on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 3:30 p.m. and Barry on Saturday, Feb. 16. at 10 a.m.

Nelson, a sophomore from Leesburg, Fla., was superb for the Eagles in their series finale against Southeastern on Saturday. In just his second start as an Eagle Nelson tossed a complete game four-hitter against the Fire, allowing just one unearned run in the process. The Winthrop transfer struck out a career-high eight batters and did not walk anyone en route to the victory.

The Eagle baseball team will travel to South Carolina Beaufort for a Sun Conference series this weekend. The teams will play a single game on Friday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 16 beginning at 12 p.m. Embry-Riddle was originally scheduled to travel to Mount Vernon, Ga. for a doubleheader at Brewton-Parker tomorrow afternoon, but those games have been postponed due to inclement weather.
