DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A pair Embry-Riddle student-athletes claimed Sun Conference weekly honors on Monday as announced by the league office.
Kristofer Karlsson (men's golf) and
Deni Zmak (men's tennis) each claimed their respective sport's award.
Karlsson earned his first conference weekly award for his performance at the Start-2-Finish Classic. The Bjarred, Sweden native shot 73-72-77 at the ninth annual event hosted by Webber International at the Lake Wales Country Club in Lake Wales, Fla. Karlsson won the event, besting 40 other golfers, helping the Eagles to a second-place finish as a team.
The men's golf team hits the links to take part in the Shark Invitational hosted by South Carolina Beaufort March 10-12. The event will serve as The Sun Conference's Spring Major tournament.
Zmak was named the player of the week for the first time in his career as well. In the Eagles' only match of the week, Zmak played at the No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles spots against conference foe Northwood. In doubles play, Freeman and
Patrick Besch topped Alvaro Ituriagga and Guilherme Azambuja 8-2. Zmak then squared off against Azambuja in singles and defeated him, 6-3, 6-0, helping the Eagles to a 7-2 victory.
The men's tennis team plays a pair of conference matches this week, beginning with a home contest against Ave Maria on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 3:30 p.m. The Eagles will then travel to Savannah, Ga. to take on SCAD Savannah on Saturday, Mar. 2 at 3:30 p.m.
