KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Freshman
Deni Zmak became the second player in Embry-Riddle men's tennis history to garner National Player of the Week accolades, according to an announcement made by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics on Wednesday. Playing at the top spot in the singles and doubles lineups, Zmak won two singles matches during the week ending Mar. 31 to run his season singles record to 13-1. He was also undefeated in doubles and stands at 11-3 on the year.
His first match of the week saw the Pula, Croatia native team up with
Chris Freeman for an 8-5 defeat of Loic Didavi and Kyle Montrell of eighth-ranked Xavier. In singles, Zmak dropped just two games on the way to a 6-1, 6-1 upset of fifth-ranked Didavi to clinch the victory for the Eagles.
The following day, Zmak and Freeman earned their second doubles win of the week courtesy of an 8-2 decision against NCAA II Northwestern Ohio's Gustavo Rueda and Cassio Sirimarco. Zmak scored the clincher again against UNOH, topping Daniel Rueda in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
