TOWSON, Md. - Embry-Riddle baseball seniors
Adam Cellini and
Chad Modomo continued to earn accolades for their performances both in the classroom and on the field as the pair was named 2013 Capital One Academic All-Americans on Tuesday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Both Cellini and Modomo earned third team recognition, becoming just the second and third Eagles to appear on the Academic All-America roster in program history, following Daniel Calverley in 1999.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his current institution and be nominated by his sports information director.
Cellini and Modomo advanced to the national ballot after earning Capital One Academic All-District honors earlier this spring, both for the first time in their careers.
Cellini, a native of Marietta, Ga., who was named the 2013 recipient of the Hank Burbridge Champions of Character Award last Thursday, boasts a 3.8 cumulative GPA in Communications with a minor in Business Administration. Cellini was named a first team All-Conference catcher for the first time in his Blue and Gold career, following a Sun Conference Gold Glove honor as a junior. The Eagle catcher is hitting .272 for Embry-Riddle with 55 hits, 15 doubles and 33 RBIs in 61 games. He also has a .987 fielding percentage behind the plate for the Blue and Gold.
Modomo, a right-handed pitcher from Winter Park, Fla., has a 3.5 GPA in Homeland Security while posting impressive numbers on the mound for the Eagles. Modomo is 7-2 with a 2.80 ERA in 15 starts and 86.2 innings of work. Modomo has struck out 61 batters and surrendered just 16 walks in 2013, and over his two-year ERAU career has pitched 164.1 innings with 116 strikeouts.
The Eagles (50-13) take on NAIA No. 1 and top-seeded Faulkner today, Tuesday, May 28 in the Avista-NAIA World Series at 6:30 p.m. (PDT).
