DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The ninth-ranked Southern Polytechnic Hornets found themselves down to fifth-seedeed LSU Alexandria in the seventh inning on Monday night, but the Hornets exploded for 12 runs in the frame and ended with a 20-6 victory to complete game one of the Daytona Beach Bracket. The Hornets (43-16) advance to play second-seeded Embry-Riddle at 2 p.m. on Tuesday while the Generals (35-24) will face off against the winner of Tennessee Wesleyan/Talladega Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
LSUA had no problem getting to starter Matt Miller early in the game, going up 4-1 before SPSU answered with a two-run third to cut the lead to 4-3. The two teams traded runs back and forth as both starters exited the game, and LSUA was up 6-5 in the seventh before the wheels fell off for the Generals.
Southern Poly sent 18 batters to the dish in the seventh, scoring 12 runs to take a commanding 17-6 lead before scoring three more in the eighth for the 20-6 final. Every starter for SPSU had ate least a hit, an RBI and a run scored in the cotnest, except for Brian Jacobs, the catcher.
