DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team had three individuals recognized for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom on Thursday. Andrea Frøshaug,
Janina Helwig and
Olivia Lynch were selected to the NCAA II District 5 Academic All-District first team by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The trio met the minimum requirements of being at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or better cumulative grade point average and have competed in a minimum 50 percent of their team's contests.
Froshaug (Oslo, Norway) is making her second appearance on the All-District roster. A Business Administration with a 3.90 GPA, Frøshaug also made the list in 2014 on the way to first team Capital One Academic All-America recognition. Now in her third season wearing the Blue and Gold, Frøshaug is one of the most decorated women's soccer players in ERAU history. A two-time NAIA All-American, she was tabbed as the NAIA National Player of the Year in 2014 after leading the Eagles to the national tournament semifinals. She currently leads the Eagles in scoring with eight goals, three of which were game-winners, and three assists for a team-best 19 points on the year.
Helwig is a senior from Freiburg, Germany, who has been a mainstay on the Eagles' back line, starting in all 14 games this season. Helwig was named to the Academic All-District team in 2014 and also garnered Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors. A two-time academic All-Sun Conference selection, she was named to the ERAU Athletics President's team twice and was an honorable mention All-Conference selection as a sophomore. This season, she is helping to anchor a defense that has allowed just eight goals on the year and posted eight shutouts. Helwig is a Mechanical Engineering major with a 3.75 GPA.
Lynch (Naples, Fla.) was also named a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete and an Academic All-Sun Conference honoree in 2014. Last season, she became the first ERAU goalkeeper to earn NSCAA All-America honors after earning second team NAIA All-America and All-Conference first team honors. Now in her senior season, Lynch has started 33 of 34 games in goal for the Blue and Gold over the last two seasons. So far this year, she has played 1,218 minutes, recording 67 saves, eight shutouts, and a 0.59 goals against average. Lynch has a 3.66 GPA in Aeronautics with minors in Flight, Homeland Security and Aeronautical Studies.
Frøshaug, Helwig and Lynch were all recipients of ERAU Athletics' Eagle of Excellence Scholarships for 2015-16. Additionally, Lynch was selected as a Steve & Vicky Ridder scholarship winner.
The Eagles will close out their 2015 campaign with a 1 p.m. road game at Georgia Gwinnett on Sunday.
