Rio Grande Jumps On Southeastern in Opening Game Win, 10-4

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The University of Rio Grande (Ohio) didn't wait long to jump out to an early lead against Southeastern (Fla.) in the opening game of the 2015 NAIA National Championship Opening Round - Daytona Beach Bracket, going up 3-0 in the second before eventually taking an 8-0 lead in the fourth. Southeastern (38-20) couldn't seem to solve starter Trent Downs, amanhing just four runs against him as URG (33-20) took a 10-4 victory and a place in tonight's 6 p.m. game against top-seeded Auburn Montgomery (Ala.).

Downs (6-1) tossed eight strong innings, including an inning following a 50-minute lightning delay, allowing just nine hits and three earned runs while striking out six Fire batters. Kirk Yates and Kyle Findley each collected three RBIs on a pair of hits while four other RedStorm players recorded multiple hits in the contest.

Patrick Kinney (8-5) lasted just 3.1 innigs, surrendering seven runs (five earned) on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Luis Diaz had three hits and a run for the Fire, while Daniel Acevedo, Sean Anderson and Stetson McCollin each recorded an RBI.

SEU will play Tuesday at 10 a.m. against the loser of Embry-Riddle and Bryan.
