BRADENTON, Fla. – The fifth-seeded Embry-Riddle (12-7) men's tennis team notched the first Sunshine State Conference Tournament win in program history on Thursday with a 5-0 defeat of No. 4 seed Palm Beach Atlantic (15-9). Thursday's win avenged a loss to the 19th-ranked Sailfish just four days ago and secured a spot for the 18th-ranked Eagles in the conference tournament semifinals.
Playing at No. 1 doubles, 15th-ranked
Rodolfo Arreygue and
Andres Donayre were dominant in their defeat of 18th-ranked Pietro de Silva and Pato Zarazua, downing the PBA pair 8-1 for the Eagles' first point of the afternoon. Playing at the second doubles position,
Juan Ortiz Couder and
Lucas Bos jumped out to a 4-1 lead on the way to an 8-3 win over Phillipp Hoffmann and Bernardo Ferreira. The third-flight doubles match between ERAU's
Mickael Faucher and Deepak Vishvkarma and PBA's Rodolfo Hasegawa and Thomas Salmon saw the Eagle tandem win the last three games to take the match 8-5.
The last meeting between the Eagles and the Sailfish saw Donayre fall behind Hoffman 6-1 in the first set before retiring in the second, but on Wednesday the 31st-ranked ERAU sophomore had no trouble dispatching PBA's 66th-ranked second flight player 6-1, 6-1 to put the Blue and Gold up 4-0.
Sunday's match also saw No. 33 Zarazua get by 29th-ranked Ortiz Couder in three sets, but Thursday's rematch belonged to Ortiz Couder who clinched the Eagle victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the top spot in the singles lineup.
The Eagles will be back in action at 2 p.m. on Friday when they take on No. 1 seed and top-ranked Saint Leo in the SSC Tournament semifinal.
