DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 18th-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team suffered a 5-3 loss to No. 5 Lynn (15-6) in the third-place match of the Sunshine State Conference tournament on Saturday. The Eagles were unable to overcome a 2-1 deficit after doubles play and moved to 12-9 on the year.
The Eagles notched the first point of the game when
Deepak Vishavkarma and
Mickael Faucher teamed up for an 8-5 win over Tristan Houle and Gabriel Hocevar at No. 3 doubles. The Fighting Knights quickly evened the score when Jean-Baptiste Mateo and Jose Porfirio downed
Juan Ortiz Couder and
Lucas Bos 8-1 on court two, and Florian Clemares and Kay Bartmann upended 15th-ranked
Rodolfo Arreygue and
Andres Donayre 8-6 at the top spot to make it 2-1 Lynn heading into singles.
Lynn was able to make it 4-1 when Porfirio bested Faucher 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles and Hocevar topped Bos 6-2, 6-4 at the fifth spot.
No. 31 Donayre battled 46th-ranked Bartmann to a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win at the second singles position, and Vishavkarma rebounded from a 7-5 loss in the first set to defeat Clemares 6-1, 6-3 on court three and pull the Eagles within one (4-3).
The last two matches on the court, both went to three sets, and in the end, it was sixth-ranked Mateo who was able to hold off No. 29 Oritz Couder to 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to clinch the win.
The Eagles will now wait to see if they have earned an at-large bid to the regional tournament. The NCAA is scheduled to announce the tournament field on April 24.
