Florida Tech Downs ERAU

MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Florida Tech Panthers downed the Embry-Riddle Eagles on Wednesday, October 10, 3-1 in a non-conference match (30-20, 30-32, 30-18, 30-20).

Game one began fast and was tied at two when the Eagles took their second turn at serving. Janelle Marinos served the next four points for ERAU taking the lead at 6-2. Jenni Nelsen and Savannah Trakes aided Marinos's attempts at the service line with kills. Mayne Pegorari soon led the Panthers back into the game, tying the game at nine, then taking the lead to 25-15. The Eagles attempted a comeback scoring five points late in game one but were unable to block FIT's attacks, losing 30-20.

The Eagles led most of game two, with their largest lead of the night at 25-20, the Panthers took a timeout to refresh and were able to tie the game at 27. FIT had a chance at game point at 29-28, but couldn't complete the attack as Marissa Gonzales and Alana Martinez came up with a huge block to tie the game. A couple of volleys later and two hitting errors by the Panthers allowed the Eagles to take game two, 32-30.

FIT flew out of intermission with more determination than was shown in the first two games, closing out the night in four games. Poor hitting by ERAU led to their largest margin of loss thus far this season, being held to below twenty points in a game for just the fourth time this year (the third time by a NCAA Division II institution).

Gonzales assisted 30 kills on the night, and had the highest hitting percentage for the team killing four of her nine attempts. Martinez led the team in kills marking nine with six blocks. Marinos had 21 digs with six kills. Nelsen had eight kills, four blocks and two service aces. She has charted at least one ace in the past five matches.

Embry-Riddle will host the University of St. Francis (Ill.) as well as Flagler College on Saturday, October 13 in a double header with game times beginning at 12 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively.
