Men's Soccer Advances to Regional Title Game with 3-2 Win Over Northwood

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. ? The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team advanced to the NAIA Region XIV championship game with a 3-2 win over Northwood at the SCAD Athletics Complex on Friday. Friday's game was a rematch of last year's regional semifinal which saw the fourth-seeded Seahawks (10-4-1) edge the No. 1 seed Eagles by one goal. The 2007 seedings were the same as a year ago, but this time the Eagles scored two goals in the first half and once in the second to avenge last season's loss and improve their overall record to 9-6-2.

The first goal of the match came at the 12:02 mark. Mike Scott's cross from the right side found A.J. Barrett on the left and the junior slotted home his fifth goal of the year to give the Eagles the early lead.

Senior Carl Sheard netted his first goal of 2007 less than three minutes later when he headed home Sam Litchfield's cross to put increase the lead to 2-0.

Joonas Sikaala got a goal back in the 42nd minute with help from Niklas Rantanen and Jonathan Taylor to make the score 2-1 at the halftime break.

A series of quick touch passes led to the Eagles' third goal in the 79th minute as Phil Middleton found Litchfield in front of the net and Litchfield took full advantage of the opportunity, netting his 10th goal of the year to reclaim a two-goal margin.

Siikala struck again for the Seahawks in the 83rd minute, but the Eagle defense, led by FSC Player of the Year Hugh Davey, kept Northwood at bay over the next seven minutes to preserve the win.

The Eagles will play the winner of Friday's nightcap between tournament host Savannah College of Art & Design and Webber International at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship in Olathe, Kan., Nov. 14-20.
