LAKE WALES, Fla. ? The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team suffered its second conference loss of the season on Wednesday, falling to Warner Southern 2-1 on the road. Both goals came in the second half for the Royals who improved to 8-4-1 overall and 5-2-1 in The Sun Conference. The ninth-ranked Eagles now stand at 6-4-2 overall and 3-2 in league play.
The match was a tale of two halves with the Eagles controlling the offense for much of the first half and the Royals getting the better of the offensive opportunities in the second.
Embry-Riddle created numerous scoring opportunities in the first frame, including a long-range shot by Richard Genge that was stopped by Royals' goalkeeper Robert Highley and a shot by Marco Harleman that sailed just past the upper right corner of the goal.
The Eagles outshot the Royals 9-3 but were unable to capitalize on any of their chances resulting in a scoreless tie at the intermission.
Jaime Garzon broke the deadlock in the 47th minute with a shot from just outside the 18-yard box.
The Royals widened the gap seven minutes later when Michael Alvarado chipped the ball across the face of the goal to an umarked Daniel Scully at point blank range and Scully headed home the Royals' second goal of the night to make the score 2-0.
The Eagles pulled back to within a goal after Marco Harleman played a ball off a Warner Southern defender over the touch line. Ryan Woods took the ensuing corner kick and J.L. Wilson took advantage of confusion in front of the goal to net the Eagles' only goal of the night.
Warner Southern had several more chances but was thwarted by ERAU netminder Alfredo Diaz who came off his line for some big stops and denied another try from point blank range with a fingertip save. Diaz finished the night with three saves, while Highley collected four for the Royals.
The Eagles' next game will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday when they host Webber International in another conference fixture.
