Eagle Men Advance to Regional Title Match

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The third-ranked Embry-Riddle (15-2) men's tennis team swept through doubles and dropped just one game in the completed singles matches en route to a 5-0 shutout of St. Thomas (3-10), Friday in the semifinals of the NAIA Region XIV tournament. The win afforded the Eagles a spot in the regional title match at 1 p.m. on Saturday when they will attempt to defend their regional crown against No. 2 seed Savannah College of Art & Design. The Bees advanced following a 5-1 win over Webber International on Friday.

The No. 1 tandem of Mislav Hizak and Konstantin Lazarov and the No. 3 duo of Carlos Bes Comeras and Tomoaki Yasuda each recorded 8-1 wins in doubles play over Federic Acevedo and Ricardo Marquez and Kenneth Evans and Diego Paredes, respectively. Jan Hoekzema and Luke Maricic bested Jeremy Bache and Ricardo Valquez 8-6 to put the Eagles up 3-0 heading into singles play.

Yasuda easily defeated Evans 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 position to increase the margin to 4-0. Marcic, in only his sixth dual match of the year, extended his unbeaten streak to 6-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Valquez at the sixth spot to clinch the victory.

St. Thomas ends its season at 3-10.
