MOBILE, Ala. ? The second-seeded Embry-Riddle men's tennis team won two doubles points and three singles matches to defeat Berry at the NAIA National Tournament at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center on Tuesday. The Eagles (17-2), who received a first-round bye, are through to the quarterfinal round for the fourth year in a row where they will face the winner of the Lindsey WIlson/SCAD contest. The quarterfinal match is slated for 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
Carlos Bes Comeras and Tomoaki Yasuda earned the first doubles point for the Eagles with a quick 8-2 defeat of Marcelo Peterlini and Chris Clark at the third position. Mislav Hizak and Konstantin Lazarov were next off the court after their 8-4 win over Christian Jackle and Andre Ferreira at No. 1.
Berry's only victory of the day was at the No. 2 doubles position as Marcelo Lebrao and Adam Clifton got past Jan Hoekzema and Istvan Bolgar, 8-5.
Hoekzema avenged the doubles loss with a 6-1, 6-0 singles win over Daniel Mician at No. 4 to increase the Eagle advantage to 3-1. Yasuda followed with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Peterlini at No. 5, just seconds ahead of Hizak who clinched the victory with a 6-0, 6-1 over Jackle at the top spot.
Berry ends its season at 10-10 overall with the loss.
