DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ?Tessa Gavilsky scored one goal in each half of play to lead the Stetson women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Embry-Riddle, Sunday at the Stetson Soccer Complex. The win was the first of the season for the Hatters who are now 1-4-1, while the Eagles fall to 1-1 on the year.
The Eagles got the scoring started in the 16th minute after Madeleine Edbom took the ball down the left side and got it to go off a Stetson defender over the touch line. Cecelie Henrikssen lifted the resulting corner kick into the six-yard box and Elina Johansson headed the ball past Stetson netminder Andrea Garavaglia for her fourth goal of the season to give the Eagles the lead.
The Eagles' second goal came on another set piece after Johansson was brought down on the left side of the field. Mandy Drummond took the ensuing free kick and her low, driven ball found its way through the Stetson defense to Johansson on the back post and the sophomore tapped in her second goal of the game to increase the Eagle lead to 2-0
The Hatters closed the gap to 2-1 with just over five minutes left in the first half courtesy of Gavilsky's first goal of the game.
Stetson controlled the offense for the much of the second half and, after a number of close calls, they finally found the back of the net as Gavilsky capitalized on a defensive breakdown to score the equalizer in the 67th minute.
The Hatters' game-winner came just three minutes later when Bethany Kiedis whipped a cross into the box that was headed home by Samantha Snyder.
Garavaglia and ERAU's Dina Roper went the distance in the nets for their respective teams with Garavaglia pulling in four saves and Roper collecting seven.
The Eagles continue their three-game road swing when they travel to Georgia this coming weekend. They will take on Berry at 4 p.m. on Friday in Mt. Berry, Ga. and will face Shorter in Rome, Ga. at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
