MT. BERRY, Ga. ? The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team had a great chance to knock off a ranked opponent but was unable to take advantage of the opportunity, falling 1-0 to No. 11 Berry, Friday at the Ford Field on Berry's campus. The Vikings improved to 4-2, while the Eagles now stand at 1-2 with the loss.
The Eagles came out strong, putting the Vikings in defensive mode with a 4-1 shot advantage in the first 20 minutes. On a number of occasions, the ball bounced loose in front of the goal only to be cleared away by the Berry defense at the last second. One of the Eagles' best chances of the half came when a deflection off a cross by ERAU defender Mandy Drummond hit the Viking crossbar and bounded out of harm's way.
Despite their offensive pressure, the Eagles found themselves down a goal midway through the first half after a Berry player was judged to have been fouled inside the Eagles' 18-yard box. Christie Latimer took the penalty kick and that proved to be the difference in the contest.
The one-goal deficit fueled the Eagles' determination in the second half and they came to close to evening the score on several occasions, including a shot that went off Berry goalkeeper Vanessa Zimmerman's fingertips and hit the post before going out of bounds.
The Eagles consistently swarmed the Vikings' offensive third, but the Berry defense did a good job of scrambling to keep the ball out of their net and held on for the 1-0 win.
The Eagles close out their Georgia road trip at 1 p.m. on Sunday when they take on Shorter.
