MOBILE, Ala. -
AJ Barrett's goal in overtime lifted the Embry-Riddle men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over No. 1 Auburn-Montgomery, Saturday in Mobile, Ala. The Eagles improve their overall record to 2-1-2, while the Senators fall to 5-2-0.
A larger AUM team pressured the Eagles early in the first half, playing a game of possession. Despite the Senators frequent presence in Eagle territory, the Embry-Riddle defense did a good job containing the ball, not allowing AUM to get a good look at the net. Fifteen minutes elapsed before either team took a shot.
The Eagles scored the first goal in the 29th minute of the game.
Joe Yoffe dribbled past his defender on the right side, crossed the ball to find
Peter Masters charging the net. Masters sent a header ball into the upper-90 for his first goal on the season.
The Eagles organized several more strong offensive drives before the end of the first half, including a thru-pass from
Marco Harleman that pitted
Ryan Woods in a one-on-one battle with the AUM netminder Kile Kennedy. Woods' took a shot that curved just wide of the net.
AUM came out in the second half hungry to even the score. A free kick from Yuki Kariya in the 47th minute floated over the Eagles defense and landed at the feet of Vignir Benediktsson, who then hammered the ball into the bottom corner of the net to tie the score.
The Eagles increased the pressure in the latter half of the second period, maintaining control of the ball with sharp passes from one side of the field to the other. AUM answered with several counterattacks, but neither team was able to break the 1-1 deadlock, sending the game to overtime.
The Eagles and the Senators traded possession early in the first overtime period, both trying to secure the “golden goal.” A foul by AUM set Yoffe up for a free kick at 25 yards out. Yoffe bent the ball over AUM's wall, hitting the underside of the crossbar for Kennedy to deflect safely out of bounds.
One minute later, the Eagles scored the game-winning goal. The play started when
Michael Donald dribbled inside and sent a low-driven pass to Yoffe's feet. Yoffe lobbed the ball over the Senators' defense for
AJ Barrett to latch on to. Barrett drove a shot to the far corner, where the ball rebounded off the post and fell into the back of net. The Embry-Riddle bench erupted with celebration as their upset of the No. 1 team was solidified. Head Coach Dave Gregson is now 4-0 against No. 1 teams in the nation.
The Eagles will open conference play on Wednesday against Webber International. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
