No. 3 Eagles Blank Northwood 9-0

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The third-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis (12-2) team extended its 2009 unbeaten streak in league play to four matches with a 9-0 shutout of Northwood (3-8, 1-4)in Sun Conference action on Saturday. The shutout was the Eagles' third in conference play this season and they continue to hold on to the top spot in the league standings at 4-0.

The Eagle men celebrated all three teams being ranked in the Top 20 in the latest ITA/NAIA National poll with a clean sweep of the Seahawks in doubles play. Teaming up for just the second time this season Charlie Rice and Zander Woodford-Smith easily handled Josh Eqas and Alex Archuleta 8-0 at the third doubles position. The top-ranked team of Carlos Bes Comeras and Jan Hoekzema had little trouble getting by Daniel Abbink and Kevin Butler, defeating the Northwood duo 8-1. Istvan Bolgar and Peter Francis completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win against Gabriel Cernia and Mario Castinada.

Rice, who did not drop a single game on the day, was the first to finish his singles match, improving his overall record at the No. 3 spot to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Butler. After falling behind 2-1, Hoekzema bounced back to take the first set 6-3 and shut out Abbink in the second set, 6-0, to clinch the Embry-Riddle win.

Francis claimed a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Cernia at No. 2 and Woodford-Smith registered the second shutout of his freshman campaign, downing Eqas at the fourth position. Bolgar downed Castinada 6-0, 6-1 and sophomore Sean de la Bastide earned the first dual match win of his career with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Archuleta at the sixth spot.

The Eagles will play their final conference match of the season at 4 p.m. on Monday when they host Warner at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
