DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? For the seventh straight year, the Embry-Riddle men's tennis team will play for a postseason tournament title as they advanced to the championship match of The Sun Conference tournament with a 5-0 win over Webber International on Friday. The Eagles, who earned the tournament's top seed after winning the regular season crown, will play No. 2 Savannah College of Art and Design for the tournament crown at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Istvan Bolgar and
Peter Francis were the first to finish their doubles match as they had little trouble getting by Reyne Hospeddes and Francisco Franco, 8-1.
Adrian Bayh and
Charlie Rice followed with an 8-3 win over Nacho Cachan and Rafael Teixera.
Carlos Bes Comeras and
Jan Hoekzema fell behind 3-0 to WIU's Philippe Andermatt and Caio Cardoso, but top-ranked duo showed its resilience and battled back to complete the Eagles' doubles sweep with an 8-4 win at the top spot.
After sitting out doubles play,
Zander Woodford-Smith was anxious to get on the court in singles and his eagerness resulted in a quick 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Hospeddes at the No. 6 singles spot.
Up 4-0, the Eagles needed only one more individual win to clinch the match. In the end it was Francis who defeated Cachan 6-0, 6-1 to send the Blue and Gold through to the title match.
The Eagles are now 15-2 on the year.
