DELAND, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team suffered a 7-0 setback at the hands of NCAA DI foe Stetson University on Thursday night. The game was the Eagle's season opener while the Hatters were playing their third contest of the year.
Junior Elina Johansson started the game with a shot that rebounded off the crossbar to keep the game scoreless until SU's Tessa Gavilsky scored in the ninth minute with a header from a SU corner kick to make the score 1-0.
The Eagles controlled the ball for most of the first half but were unable to capitalize on any opportunities. Stetson managed to score a second goal before the half with just seven seconds left until half time to bring their lead to 2-0.
Stetson scored early in the second half off a cross and failed to relinquish the lead adding four more goals in the final period to account for the final of 7-0.
Senior Kristen Phelps attempted three shots to go along with Johansson's three in the loss.
The Eagles look to even their season record this Sunday (Aug. 30) as they play host to the Nova Southeastern Sharks. Game time is set for 5 p.m. at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
