MIAMI, Fla. – The ninth-ranked Barry women's tennis team won all three doubles points and took four of six singles to hand Embry-Riddle its first loss of the season with a 7-2 win on Saturday. The Eagles, ranked fourth in the NAIA preseason poll, are now 4-1 overall while the Lady Buccaneers are 1-0 on the year.
The first doubles match to be completed was at the No. 3 spot where Angie Werschel and Darina Yablonskaya came from being 3-2 down to top
Sara Abraul and
Caroline Nilsson 8-3. Yulia Kashelkina and Mia Fiocca topped
Julija Stojkovska and
Josefine Strom 8-5, and Barbi Pocza and Julie Stas got by
Natasa Zoricic and
Yi Ching Chen 8-6 at No. 1` to give Barry a 3-0 advantage heading into singles play.
The Eagles avoided being shutout by notching a pair of singles wins. Chen downed Werschel 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 and Strom gritted out a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Fiocca at the fifth position.
The Eagles are back in action at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday when they host NCAA I Jacksonville at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
