WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team
notched its third win against a Sunshine State opponent with a 6-3 defeat of Rollins,
Thursday at the Tars' Bert Martin Tennis Complex. The fourth-ranked Eagles
improved their overall record to 5-1, while the Tars, ranked 10th in
NCAA II, are 1-2 on the year.
The Eagles swept all three doubles points to take a 3-0 advantage
into singles play. The ERAU tandem of Jan Hoekzema and Alexis Huegas went up 3-0
against Jeff Morris and Neil Clausen en route to an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles.
The Rollins team of Arturo Baravalle and Girts Dzelde went up a break at the
No. 2 doubles position, but the Eagles' Istvan Bolgar and Peter Francis bounced
back to win the match 8-6.
Charlie Rice and Luke Maricic fell behind 4-1 to Chris Herbert
and Nick Rowlands at the third doubles spot, but the ERAU duo rebounded to
complete the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win of their own.
Huegas was the first to finish his singles match, capturing a
straight-set, 6-3, 6-2 win over Clausen at No. 2 singles. The next match off
the court was at the sixth spot where Zander Woodford-Smith clinched the win
for the Eagles with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Rowlands.
The Tars got a point back at the No. 1 singles position as
Morris bested Hoekzema 6-3, 6-4. Baravalle lost the first set to Francis 7-6
(10-8), but won the second 6-1 and held off Francis 10-8 in the tie breaker at
the third spot. The No. 4 singles match also went to three sets where Dzelde
took the first set 6-4, dropped the second set 6-3 and pulled out the win
against Rice with a 10-6 decision in the third set.
Istvan Bolgar sealed the win for the Eagles with a 7-5, 6-4
defeat of Constantin Sturdza at the fifth spot.
The Eagles return to action at noon on Feb. 27 when they
host conference rival Savannah College of Art and Design at the Crotty Tennis
Complex.
