DELAND, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle (4-3) women's tennis team suffered its third loss of the season on Saturday, falling to NCAA I Stetson (5-2) 6-1 at the Hatters' Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
Playing according to NCAA I rules, Stetson took a 1-0 lead after doubles. Breanna Atkinson and Katherine Nowicki took an 8-4 win over
Julija Stojkovska and
Josefine Strom, followed by Valentina Galbarini and Caroline Santos, who topped
Natasa Zoricic and
Yi Ching Chen 8-5 at the top doubles spot. Jen Miller and Natalie Gorham closed out the Hatters' doubles sweep with an 8-4 decision against Carolina Nilsson and
Sara Abraul at No. 3
The first two singles matches off the court were at the third and fourth spots as Atkinson topped Stojkovska 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 and Santos blanked Nilsson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. Shannon Gunning topped Strom 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 and Galbarini scored the clincher with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Zoricic at No. 1.
Chen registered the only win of the day for the Eagles, pulling out a three-setter against Unnati Purushotham, 3-6, 6-4, 10-7.
The Eagles return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday when they host NCAA II Rollins at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
