DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team suffered a tough loss to NCAA II No. 6 Valdosta State on Saturday, falling 8-1 to the Blazers at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles are now 6-4 on the year while the Blazers improve to 4-2 with the win.
The Blazers took a 2-0 advantage after Sonya Haggstrom and Dominque Rothlander topped
Sara Abraul and
Caroline Nilsson 8-3 at No. 3 doubles and Raphaelle Durante and Tina Trautmann downed
Josefine Strom and
Julija Stojkovska 8-4 at No. 2.
The Eagles registered their only point of the match when
Natasa Zoricic and
Yi Ching Chen toppled ranked Natali Gumbrecht and Hollie Bees 8-6 at the top doubles position.
Embry-Riddle was unable to build on the momentum of that doubles win as Trautmann downed Nilsson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 and Haggstrom bested Strom 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 to extend the Blazer lead to 4-1. Chen gave Durante a tough battle at No. 2, but in the end, it was the Blazer junior that was able to clinch the VSU win with a 7-5, 6-2 decision.
Embry-Riddle will play its next four matches at home, starting with Eastern Kentucky at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.
