DELAND, Fla. - A goal in the 88th minute of play gave NCAA I Stetson a 2-1 victory over the Embry-Riddle Eagles in ERAU's season opener. The Eagles begin the 2010 season 0-1 as the Hatters improve to 2-1 overall.
The game was delayed for 30 minutes as lightning pushed the start time back to 7:30 p.m.
The Hatters scored first in the 9th minute when Courtney Jenista put home a shot off a Tessa Gavilsky cross to beat freshman keeper Jennifer Grimes for a 1-0 lead.
The Blue and Gold answered quickly in the 16th minute when newcomer Valerie Obita hammered home a rebound off a Krizzy Menez shot that was saved. Obita's goal knotted the game at 1-1, a score that would hold for the rest of the first half and most of the second half.
The second half featured 17 shots (9-8 in favor of SU), four corners (two each) and seven saves (4-3 ERAU), but neither team could find the back of the net until Jenista's late score.
The Eagles managed eight shots on goal to Stetson's 11, and the Hatters held an 11-7 advantage in fouls.
Grimes ended with nine saves in her collegiate debut, and Elina Johansson, Obita and Cecilie Henriksen managed five, three and three shots respectively.
Embry-Riddle's next game will be Monday, Aug. 30 against Webber International in a non-conference matchup with the Warriors. WIU will travel to Daytona Beach for ERAU's first home contest at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
