Fourth-Ranked Eagles Topple No. 2 Auburn Montgomery 6-3

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team earned a signature win at home on Tuesday, downing 10-time NAIA National Champion Auburn Montgomery 6-3.  Playing their first home match ever against an NAIA Top-5 opponent, the fourth-ranked Eagles improved their overall record to 9-3, while the Lady Senators, ranked second in the latest national poll dropped to 10-2 on the year.

The Eagles gained a significant advantage prior to the first serve as injury left the Lady Senators with just four available players. Consequently, AUM had to forfeit the matches at No. 3 doubles and the fifth and sixth singles spots, which gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

Doubles play saw Rocío Frej Vitallé and Ekaterina Kamendova down Kuetka Hajlkova and Alina Tseplukova 8-2 at the second spot. ERAU's top-ranked tandem of Yi Ching Chen and Josefine Ström topped No. 4 Ana Veselnovic and Morgane Zowczak 8-4 to make the team score 5-0 and secure the Eagle win.

The Lady Senators managed to get three points back in singles play as 16th-ranked Zowczak toppled NAIA No. 10 Frej Vitallé in three sets (6-3, 4-6, 10-5) and 15th-ranked Tseplukova bested Marova 6-0, 6-4. At No. 2 singles, Kamendova extended the Eagle lead, registering a two-set defeat of No. 27 Hajlkova (6-3, 6-3).

The contest at No. 1 singles was a rematch of the 2010 USTA/ITA NAIA national semifinal between Chen and Veselnovic. In the first meeting between the two teams, second-ranked Chen got the better of a three-setter against the second Veselnovic. In Monday's match-up, Veselnovic took the first set, but Chen won the second to force a decisive third set once again. What should have been a 10-point tie breaker turned into a marathon and in the end, Veselnovic was able to take the match with a 19-17 win in the third.

The Eagles will be back in action at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday when they host 12th-ranked Southern Nazarene at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
