No. 4 Women?s Tennis Defeats No. 17 Oklahoma Baptist

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The fourth-ranked Embry-Riddle women's tennis team wrapped up a successful week with an 8-1 defeat of No. 17 Oklahoma Baptist, Saturday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles are now 12-3 on the year, including a 5-0 record against ranked NAIA opponents, while the Lady Bison fall to 4-4.

Kristina Márová and Paola Montero quickly wrapped up their match at No. 3 doubles with an 8-0 shutout of Elisa Brito and Katie Halbesleban. Rocío Frej Vitallé and Ekaterina Kamendova increased the Eagle lead to 2-0 with an 8-2 decision against Mariana Rosa and Diana Burns at the No. 2 spot.

The contest at the top doubles spot was a rematch of the 2011 USTA/ITA NAIA semifinals between ERAU's Yi Ching Chen and Josefine Ström and OBU's Paola Costa and Lilian Ferreira. In the first meeting between the two teams last October, the ERAU tandem easily downed the Lady Bison pair 6-2, 6-1, but Saturday's match went to Ferreira and Costa whose 8-3 win made the team score 2-1 in favor of the Eagels heading into singles play.

Despite the setback, the Eagles rode the momentum of the other two doubles wins into singles action. Caroline Nilsson came through first for the Blue and Gold with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Burns at No. 5 and Márová was close behind with a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Halbesleban at No. 4. Kamendova registered the clincher with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Fereirra at the second singles position.

Chen was able to exact a measure of revenge for the doubles loss as she dispatched Costa 6-3, 6-1 and the Eagles claimed its final point of the day at the No. 6 spot where Montero bested Brio 6-1, 6-1.

The Eagles continue their spring break slate with a doubleheader on Monday. The Blue and Gold will face Northwestern Ohio at 10 a.m. and will take on Coastal Georgia in an exhibition match scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
