THE EAGLESThe Embry-Riddle women's basketball team is riding a three-game winning streak heading into today's game against Point. In their final game before the Christmas break, the Eagles got a 23-point, 13-rebound performance from
Mercedes Jorge to dispatch Sterling 76-54. The Eagles are now 5-3 in their inaugural campaign. her performance on Dec. 15 helped Jorge jump to the top of the Eagles' scoring charts. The sophomore is averaging a team-best 10.9 points per game, while
Taylor Cyphers leads the Blue and Gold in rebounding (8.75 rpg) and blocks (2.38 bpg).
Sabrina Whiting is the team leader in both assists (3.50) and steals (2.38) per contest.
THE SKYHAWKSAfter Point finished at 14-17 overall last season, second-year head coach Tory Wooley has guided his women's basketball team to a 9-4 record so far in 2014-15. Their last time out saw the Skyhawks register a 74-60 road win over Columbia (S.C.) on Dec. 15. 2013-14 Appalachian Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year Dereese Owens is the Skyhawks' leading scorer, averaging 18.64 points per game. She also leads her team in assists (2.36 apg) and steals (2.82 spg). Catika Brown is Point's leading rebounder with a 6.69 rebound-per-game average.
AMONG THE NATION'S BESTAs a team, the Eagles rank No. 1 in three-point field goal percentage defense (0.193) and are second nationally in total rebounds (49.62) per game. ERAU is also third in field goal percentage defense (0.313) and total rebound margin (12.75), and are fourth in offensive rebounds (18.0) per game. Cyphers ranks among the nation's top 30 in blocks per game (14th), total blocks (20th, 2.37) and defensive rebounds (30th, 6.12), while Jorge is 13th in offensive rebounds per game (4.0).
