Game Recap: #20 Women's Basketball |

Whiting Leads Eagles in 88-48 Rout of Point

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team (6-3) continued the dominant form it exhibited prior to the holiday break as the Eagles turned in an 88-48 rout of Point (9-5) on the last day of the Land of Magic Classic on Tuesday. The Eagles, who were back in the ICI Center following a 15-day layoff, shot 54.2 percent (32-59) from the field, including a 55.5 percent (10-of-18) clip from beyond the arc on the way to their fourth consecutive victory.

Freshman Sabrina Whiting led all scorers with 21 points, going 7-of-10 from the field and 6-of-8 from the three-point line. Kalah Martin chipped in 15 points and pulled down a game-high seven rebounds, while Ashle Muse wrapped the evening as the only other Eagle scorer in double figures with 12 points.

The Eagles found their rhythm from long range right out the gate as five of their first six baskets were of the three-point variety. The Skyhawks could not find an answer for Whiting who sparked the Eagles' blistering start with a perfect 6-for-6 performance from the three-point line in the first half.

A 19-8 Eagle run prompted Point Head Coach Tory Wooley to call an early timeout. The Skyhawks responded by closing the gap to seven points (19-12) at the 11:18 mark, but the Eagles, who were 15-of-25 from the field in the first 20 minutes of play, continued to pour on the offense and eventually the lead ballooned to 21 points (39-18) before the home team went into the locker room up 42-24 at the half.

The Blue and Gold did not have as much offensive success on the perimeter in the second frame as they did in the first, but they made up for that by getting the ball inside and finishing shots in the paint or from the free throw line, where they were 11-of-18 in the second half.

A layup by Schelbi McKenzie with 18:22 remaining made it an 18-point game, but that was as close as the Skyhawks would get as the Eagles outshot the visiting team 47-24 in the second frame on the way to their second-largest margin of victory of the season.

Tuesday's game matched the lowest offensive output of the season for a Point team that came into the contest averaging 62.46 points per game. Catika Brown tallied 14 points, while Dereese Owens added 13 scores in the Point effort.

Next up for the Blue and Gold is a two-day, two-game weekend at the Bahama House Best Western Aku Tiki Shootout being played at the ICI Center, Jan. 2-3. The Eagles open tournament play at 3 p.m. on Friday against Southwestern (Kan.).
