@ERAUBaseball Takes Series Opener from Trinity Baptist, 6-0

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Corey Tufts tossed eight shutout innings on Friday night, as the Embry-Riddle baseball team took the series opener from Trinity Baptist, 6-0. ERAU (6-3) snapped a two-game skid with the victory, collecting 11 hits en route to the win over the host Eagles (2-9).

ERAU went quietly in the top of the first before Tufts faced the minimum in the bottom of the inning, and his team gave him all the run support he needed in the second.

Liam Goodall led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch, stealing second and then moving to third on a Matt Jacobs fly ball to center. Kyle Zirbes brought in what would prove to be the winning run with a single to right, scoring Goodall for a 1-0 lead. Zirbes stole second and when the throw from the catcher went into center field, advanced to third before scoring on a Zach Howard base hit.

Tufts again faced the minimum in the last of the second, getting a double play in the process.

ERAU pushed its lead to 3-0 in the fourth when Zirbes registered his second RBI of the night, bringing in Goodall after the Eagle left fielder doubled to start the inning.

Tufts got another double play to end the fifth, and Embry-Riddle put the game out of reach in the seventh with two more runs, one on a Tobias Moreno double that scored Zirbes and the second on Joshua Garcia's single up the middle to chase in Moreno.

Leading 5-0, Tufts worked around two hits in the seventh before the visitors accounted for the final run of the night in the eighth as Jacobs chased home Goodall with a single up the middle.

Dylan Demarest came in to close things out in the ninth, striking out one and getting the third double play of the night to end the game in favor of the Blue and Gold.

Tufts improved to 3-1, finishing with nine strikeouts and just one walk. Goodall was 2-for-4 with three runs, while Zirbes went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs. Moreno also registered a pair of hits.

The Eagles will meet Trinity Baptist in a doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 20 beginning at 2 p.m.
