DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team suffered its third-straight defeat on Wednesday night, despite playing the visiting Eckerd Tritons evenly for the vast majority of the match. The Eagles (1-4 overall) slipped to 0-3 in Sunshine State Conference play as the Tritons (3-3, 1-2) used a 75th minute header from Robert Carter to emerge with a 1-0 win over the home team.
Eckerd took control of the game in the very early going, registering the first two shots before
Tim-Frederik Lange had his shot blocked in the ninth minute, and that seemed to open the Eagle offense up a bit as both teams battled back-and-forth for the remainder of the first period.
Christian Mather's shot attempt in the 18th minute went high while
Ross Dickinson saw his effort blocked in the 21st, and those would be the final two shots the hosts would take in the opening half.
Richard Dearle made a nice save on the first Triton shot of the second half, and EC's Alex Gott returned the favor on
Teddy West's shot a few moments later.
Alex O'Brien nearly put the Eagles in front on a shot in the 61st minute, but again Gott was up to the task to keep the game level at 0-0.
The Tritons finally broke through after a corner kick eventually led to back-to-back headers, finished by Carter as the visitors went up, 1-0.
Embry-Riddle pushed forward over the final 15 minutes, with its best chance coming on a
Ryan Sitler header in the 89th minute that sailed just over the crossbar, but the Blue and Gold couldn't find the equalizer and was shutout for the second straight contest.
ERAU managed to out-shoot the Tritons, 11-10; while Dearle finished with five saves to Gott's four.
The Eagles will have their first away match on Saturday, Sept. 30 when they travel to Miami Shores to take on Barry at 6 p.m.
