ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle softball team finished competing in the South/Southeast Region Crossover hosted by Flagler College on Saturday afternoon. ERAU went up against the Flagler Saints and the University of West Alabama. The Eagles split the doubleheader, falling 8-7 to the Saints and defeating West Alabama 2-0.
Game 1
Things did not start ideally for the Eagles as they gave up five runs in the first inning thanks to a grand slam by Flagler's Morgan Murphy. The Saints scored two more runs in the bottom of the third, increasing the Eagles deficit to 7-0.
However, Embry-Riddle would not go quietly in this one. The comeback attempt began in the fifth as the Eagles scored two runs.
Maggie Scott hit and RBI double to center to score
Destiny Carroll. Scott came around to score after she stole third and was hit in by
Mackie Chandler.
With the score 7-2 in favor of Flagler going in the top of the seventh, The Eagles would have a steep hill to climb if they wanted to get back in this game. Scott walked to begin the inning and stole second a pitch later. Chandler laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Scott to third. Scott would score on the
Kailah Rain sacrifice fly, bringing the score to 7-3 with two outs.
Katy Thompson kept things going for the Blue and Gold with a single to center. A pitch hit
Mariana Pereira and
ReAnne Drayton singled to left field to load the bases.
B Limon capitalized on the opportunity, hitting a two RBI single to left filed to score Thompson and Pereira. A pitch hit Carol allowing Limon to advance to second.
Lisa Hop came through with a two RBI single of her own to score Limon and Drayton tying the game at 7-7.
Unfortunately, Flagler would win 8-7 due to a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh. This was the second game in a row in which the Eagles lost due to a walk-off hit.
Game 2
Embry-Riddle bounced back from the devastating loss in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.
Ilona Andringa picked up the win for the Eagles, pitching a complete game, allowing no runs, six hits and struck out five. Andringa had a no-hitter going all the way until the sixth inning as she improves to 2-2 on the mound this season.
The Blue and Gold scored their first run of the game in the third inning of a Scott Single to score Chandler. ERAU scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth as Pereira scored off the Limon RBI infield single.
The Eagles improve to 3-2 overall with the win and lose. Embry-Riddle returns to action when they travel to St. Petersburg on Friday, Feb. 16 to take on the Eckerd College in a three-game series with a game one on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
