TAMPA, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle softball team extended its winning streak to eight games with a 3-0, extra-inning victory over Tampa on Friday at the Spartans' Naimoli Family Softball Field. The Eagles improved to 25-6 overall and 13-3 in the Sunshine State Conference, while the Spartans fell to 17-13 overall and 8-8 in league play.
All of the game's offense came in the ninth inning after both teams went scoreless through the first eight frames. Tampa had runners in scoring position in the third and fifth inning, while the
Katy Thompson single to third and moved up on a sacrifice bunt to put a runner in scoring position for the Eagles in the fifth. However, neither side was able to push a run across to break the deadlock.
In the top of the ninth,
Kailah Rain reached on a Tampa fielding error and came around to score when
Mariana Pereira blasted her third triple of the year to right center field. Thompson followed with a double down the left field line to drive in Pereira and after moving up on a ground out, Thompson scored the Eagles' third and final run on a
Destiny Carroll single.
Bolstered by her team's offense,
Ilona Andringa struck out two and induced a fly out to right field in the ninth to seal the Eagle win. The senior pitched a complete game, and scattered five hits and struck out three to improve her record to 16-5.
Tampa's Makaleigh Dooley finished with 12 strikeouts in the loss to move to 15-9.
The three-game Embry-Riddle/Tampa series continues on Saturday with a noon doubleheader.
