DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –
Michy Ramos played the hero for the Embry-Riddle softball team Friday night. Her single up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, scored
Lisa Hop to walk off against Palm Beach Atlantic, 3-2.
Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles had not scored since the second inning. Hop led off the inning with a single to left field.
Mariana Pereira advanced the runner with a sacrifice bunt. Hop moved to third after a groundout to the pitcher. A hit by pitch, brought Ramos to the plate. The freshman came through in the clutch with a base hit up the middle to plate the game-winning run.
ERAU (17-16, 9-10 Sunshine State Conference) scored its three runs on four hits. Hop led the Eagles in hits with two, while Ramos was responsible for two Eagle runs.
Not to be overshadowed by Ramos' walk off,
Jayla Jackson put on a clinic in the circle. The junior tossed a complete game, giving up one earned run on five hits with seven strikeouts.
The game started as a potential slugfest. Palm Beach Atlantic (22-18, 10-9 SSC) loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first. Jackson limited the damage to just one run after
Savannah Brockenbrough gunned out the second PBA runner trying to score. A strikeout ended the top of the first with PBA leading 1-0.
ERAU answered in the bottom of the inning. A walk and a single put runners on first and second with no outs. A fly out and hit by pitch loaded the bases with one out. A strikeout put the Eagles at risk of coming away empty; however, Ramos was hit by a pitch to even the score at one.
In the second inning, the Eagles again found themselves with the bases loaded. Pereira forced a walk to give the hosts a 2-1 lead, but ERAU was held to one run.
The potential high scoring contest turned into a pitcher's duel as the game progressed. The Eagles were held scoreless until the seventh inning. PBA tied the game in the top of the fourth on a solo home run to centerfield. Jackson gave up just one hit after the homer.
Tonight's win brought the Eagles just one game behind the Sailfish in the Sunshine State Conference standings. The series will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch for game one takes place at 1 p.m.
