Baseball Lets One Slip Away at Eckerd in 10-9 Loss

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida - The Embry-Riddle baseball team dropped a winnable game on Friday night to open the Eagles' three-game series against Eckerd, as the hosts came back from a six-run deficit, and scored the final five runs of the game to beat ERAU 10-9. The Eagles (12-14, 2-8 SSC) hit three home runs, and held leads of 6-0, 8-2, and 9-5, but couldn't hold on against the Tritons (12-13, 6-4 SSC), as Eckerd won for the fifth straight time against the Blue and Gold.

Neither team did much against the two starting pitchers in the first few innings, but that changed quickly in the third when the Eagles scored six runs by hitting for the cycle to take a 6-0 lead. Zach Coldsnow and Andrew Martinez each collected two RBIs in the inning, including a Martinez two-run homer, but that two-run homer was matched by the Tritons in the bottom of the frame, as they cut their deficit to 6-2.

Jeremy Kennedy-Davis continued the two-run long ball trend with one of his own in the top of the fourth, giving ERAU an 8-2 advantage. Unfortunately for Garrett Goodall on the mound, the ERAU defense allowed three unearned runs to score in the bottom of the fourth, keeping the Tritons in the game at 8-5.

Embry-Riddle scored for the third straight inning when Martinez homered for the second time on the night, a solo homer to right center, and Goodall delivered a shut down inning in the home fifth, keeping the Eagles up 9-5.

After the fifth, the Eagle offense went quiet, and a three-run Eckerd home run in the sixth made it just a one-run game before the hosts tied things up in the seventh.

Embry-Riddle squandered a golden opportunity in the eighth when Nick Hoffman reached second base on an error to start the frame, and his pinch runner Justus Burke moved to third on a wild pitch with no outs. The next three Eagles failed to bring in the go-ahead run, but the Tritons did not fail in their half of the inning, getting a two-out RBI single to go up 10-9.

ERAU got the potential tying run in scoring position in the ninth, but the Triton closer got a strikeout to end the game in favor of the home team.

Martinez finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, while both Kennedy-Davis and Coldsnow each had two RBIs. Casey Keller (3-3) was tagged with the loss in two innings of relief.

Embry-Riddle and Eckerd meet for a twin bill tomorrow, Saturday, March 26 at 12 p.m. at the Turley Athletic Complex.
