LAKELAND, Florida - The Embry-Riddle baseball team dropped a tough 6-5 decision to Florida Southern on Sunday afternoon, losing the series to the Mocs two games to one. The Eagles (20-21, 8-16 SSC) came back from a four-run deficit early on, tying the game at 5-5 before ultimately seeing the comeback go for naught. The Mocs (29-12, 14-7 SSC) got big contributions from the bottom of their lineup while FSC pitchers were able to strand nine ERAU runners on base.
The big blow for the hosts came in the second when they scored four runs off of Eagle starter
Tyler Stufano, chasing him from the game. It was a string of six singles in the frame that drove in those four Moc runs before
Gunnar Harrison was able to get out of the jam to send the game to the third.
Southern added to its lead with a run in the third, but the Eagles answered back in the fourth when
Alex Britton drove in
Josh Reynolds and
Garrett Bogart with a one-out double, but was thrown out trying to go to third, one of several Eagle baserunners to be thrown out on the bases in the weekend series.
Harrison went three-up, three-down in the bottom of the fourth, and neither team did much in the fifth.
The sixth inning was the deciding one, starting when
Camden Traficante came through with a huge, two-out bases-loaded double, scoring
Dylan Brazil,
Lance Minson, and Britton, tying the game at 5-5 and giving all the momentum to the Blue and Gold.
However, that momentum was short lived as the Mocs regained the lead on a pair of doubles, going up 6-5 thanks to an unearned run, and resulting in
Spencer Marinac relieving Harrison. Marinac and the Eagles got a catch of the year candidate from Brazil in right center to keep their deficit at one run, but ERAU couldn't scratch across any runs over the final three frames.
Embry-Riddle stranded two runners in the seventh and one in the eighth before going 1-2-3 in the ninth.
Harrison (3-3) took the loss for the Eagles, going 4.1 innings with three strikeouts, while Marinac finished the game with 2.1 scoreless frames.Â
Britton was 4-for-4 with two RBIs, Reynolds finished 3-for-5, and Traficante had three RBIs on one hit.
