WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. –
Madyson Jean-Louis posted her fifth 20-point game of the season on Saturday, but it wasn't enough to push the Embry-Riddle women's basketball team to a win against Palm Beach Atlantic as the Sailfish topped the Eagles 75-63. With just two games remaining in the regular season, the Eagles sit in third place in the Sunshine State Conference standings at 12-6 and are 18-7 overall.
Jean-Louis finished with 21 points, including an 8-for-10 shooting clip at the free throw line.
Kailey Turpening added 12 points and six assists, while
Jenna Teterycz and
Kyra Haan had 10 points each.
The Eagles opened the game on a 6-1 run and at the 4:32 mark, a Turpening three had the Eagles ahead 12-7. However, the Sailfish put together a 9-3 run to take a 16-15 lead at the end of the first quarter and held the Eagles scoreless through the first three minutes of the second to widen the gap to seven (22-15). Three-pointers by Teterycz, Jean-Louis and
Sarah Napoli helped the Blue and Gold stay within striking distance at 29-28, but the Sailfish closed out the half on an 8-0 run to regain a seven-point (36-29) advantage.
The third quarter featured a lull for both teams with just three made field goals for each side. The Sailfish were able to extend the lead to as many as 12 points, but a block, a rebound, a layup and a three by Jean-Louis pulled the Eagles back within seven (48-41) points at the end of the third.
A 14-6 Eagle run to start the third cut the Sailfish lead to two (56-54) with 6:12 left to play. Kash Ayuso ended a one-minute scoreless stretch and started another Sailfish run that established another seven-point cushion. Two more Jean-Louis free throws made it a five-point (70-65) game, but the Eagles were unable to get any closer, giving PBA the win.
Ayuso was the game's leading scorer with 34 points as the Sailfish improve to 15-12 overall and 9-10 in the SSC.
The Eagles will play their final regular season home game on Wednesday against Barry. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
