Simon Felix and Deni Zmak won the Embry-Riddle men's tennis program's third USTA/ITA Doubles Championship in 2013, sweeping through three matches in straight sets for the title.
Â
Seeded fourth in the tournament, Felix and Zmak downed Westmont's Tim Goranson and John Bertramin. Zmak and Felix got the better of the 90-minute match-up and advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2, 7-5 win.
Â
The Eagles' semifinal opponent was the top-seeded team of Fernando Bogajo and Francisco Charters from Lindsey Wilson. Bogajo and Charters had a tough first-round match as they just managed to hold off Northwestern Ohio's Daniel Rueda and Ronnie Myburgh 7-6, (5), 7-5 in a contest that lasted a little over two hours. Zmak and Felix won a tough first set, 6-3, against the tournament favorites and after registering a break in the first service game of the second set, the ERAU pair cruised to a 6-1 win in the second set to secure a spot in the title match.
Â
In the title match, the Eagle duo outlasted the Aubum Montgomery pair of Nicolas Pinones-Haltenhoff and Miguel Grifol (6-2, 7-6 (5)) to win the championship.
Â
Felix and Zmak went on to win the ITA "Super Bowl" title and advance to the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. They upset third-seeded UCLA team of Marcos Giron and Mckenzie Macdonald 8-7 (7-5) before eventually bowing out to eventual champs Ashok Narayana and Max Shur from Columbia.                    Â
