DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Second-half substitute JL Wilson's first goal of the season gave the Embry-Riddle men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Warner Southern in Florida Sun Conference action on Tuesday. The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Eagles, who improved to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in league play, while the Royals fell to 3-8 and 1-4.
The contest was a physical one as the referee called 45 fouls between the two teams. Warner Southern held a 12-8 advantage in shots, but Embry-Riddle keeper Ian Levine snatched four saves in his fourth start of the year to hold the Royals at bay.
At the end of the first 45 minutes of play, neither team was able to get on the scoreboard. Both teams had four shots in the first frame, but while most of the Eagles chances came from inside the 18-yard box, forcing Royal defenders to block them and goalkeeper Luis Rincon to make a save, all of Warner Southern's were from way outside the box, sailing high and wide of the goal. As a result, the game was scoreless at the half.
Both coaches made a number of substitutions in an effort to make something happen, but the game remained deadlock through the majority of the second half.
With just under five minutes left on the clock, the Eagles won a free kick from about 30 yards out. Jimmie Berry started the set piece by lofting a ball into the box. After bouncing off a couple of players, the ball fell to Wilson in front of the goal and the freshman capitalized on his only shot of the game to tuck in the game-winner.
“I was pleased with the impact that our substitutes made in the game,” Coach Gregson commented following the match. “We just found a way to win and at this stage in the season we needed it. I was pleased to see the players get their just reward from just plugging away.”
The Eagles next match will be against St. Thomas at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
