DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Second-half goals by Tyler Brady and Cristian Fernandes gave No. 6 Oklahoma Christian a 2-1 victory over No. 11 Embry-Riddle at the NAIA Men's Soccer National Tournament on Friday.
ERAU began the game at a frenetic pace, outshooting OCU 10-4 in the first frame, including five shots on frame to OCU's one. Phil Middleton had a couple of chances to put Embry-Riddle ahead, but OCU keeper Brian Cochrum snagged both shot attempts, and his ERAU counterpart Viktor Bergrstrand pushed a Matt Clark offering over the crossbar, resulting in a scoreless tie at the half-time break.
Embry-Riddle finally converted on one of its scoring opportunities less than a minute into the second half. Joe Yoffe chased down a ball into the corner and managed to hook it back to Peter Masters running down the left side behind him. Masters' short cross found Jimmie Berry at the top left corner of the 18-yard box and Berry blasted a left-footed shot into the upper right corner to put ERAU up 1-0.
Oklahoma Christian got the equalizer on a set piece off Brady's boot just 20 seconds after Carl Sheard received a controversial second yellow card, forcing the Eagles to play a man down for the remainder of the match.
OCU further capitalized on the one-man advantage in the 72nd minute when Fernandes' low driven ball beat Bergstrand low for the game-winner.
The win propelled OCU (12-4-2) into the quarterfinal round where they will face No. 3 Webber International, and brought ERAU's season to an end at 13-7.
