Late Goals Give SCAD Upset Victory Over No. 1 Eagles

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Savannah College of Art and Design men's soccer team scored two goals late in the second half to register a stunning 2-1 upset of top-ranked Embry-Riddle in Florida Sun Conference action on Wednesday night. The Eagles led for much of the game but it was not enough to hold off the Bees who improved to 4-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in league play. The Eagles, who were rated as the top team in the nation on Wednesday afternoon suffered their first loss of the year, falling to 5-1 and 1-1.

Neither team got into much of a rhythm in the first half. ERAU held an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal, but SCAD had a 6-2 edge on corner kicks, two of which had to be cleared off the line by Eagle defenders.

The Eagles had four shots on frame and finally converted on one such opportunity with 13:16 remaining in the half. Liam McIlhatton cut inside from the left before slipping the ball through to Ian Thompson running into the box. Thompson lifted the ball over the SCAD defense to an unmarked Peter Masters who slotted the ball low past goalkeeper Tommi Sarkkinen to give the Eagles the lead.

The second half presented the Eagles with a number of scoring opportunities, but Sarkkinen kept his team in the game with three big saves coming from shots at point blank range.

At the 87:57 mark, Dan Fadida received the ball on the right side of the box and his shot beat ERAU keeper Ian Levine to tie the game.

With 29 ticks left on the clock, Kofi Boateng found himself unmarked inside the box and capitalized on the advantage to drive home the game-winner.

"In the first half we were flat," head coach David Gregson said following the match. "The second half performance was extremely positive. It's a harsh lesson to learn, but we couldn't find a way to finish the game and in the end got punished for two mistakes. So we'll regroup and come back for Webber."

The Embry-Riddle men return to the pitch at 7 p.m. on Saturday when they host Webber International at Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
