DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - NCAA Division II Palm Beach Atlantic University hit .351 as a team and limited Embry-Riddle University to just .092 hitting behnd a strong block (20 block assists and one solo) and 51 team digs in just three games to prevail 3-0 (30-23, 30-14, 30-22).
Embry-Riddle came out strong in the first game and actually held a 16-13 advantage, but PBA outscored the Eagles 15-3 behind the play of Bia Santos who recorded two kills and three service aces in the run putting Palm Beach Atlantic ahead 28-19. ERAU closed the gap to 29-23, but Ursula Vieira put the game away with a kill.
The second game was all Sailfish as they opened the game with nine consecutive serves by Whitney Warren with one service ace to pull ahead 9-0. The Eagles scored on Warren's 10th serve on Jenn Meglic's kill, but the PBA scoring onslaught continued as they expanded their lead to 18-2 with a 9-1 run. Embry-Riddle just couldn't get anything going offensively swinging -.034 for the game (8K-9E-29A) and the lead proved to be insurmountable as the Sailfish pushed it to 26-9 and cruised to a 30-14 victory. Vieira who was 6-for-6 in her attacks and added five block assists was among many players who just played one of those perfect games as the team hit .583 (15K-1E-24A). Ali Mitchell added five kills in seven attempts with one error, Chrissy Gulden was 3-for-4 on her swings in the game and Whitney Warren recorded nine of her match-high 17 digs in game two.
Vieira recorded 13 kills on 19 attempts with just two errors to hit .579 for the match, Mitchell added 10 kills, while Brittany Erickson and Santos added eight and seven kills, respectively. Sara Beth Warren posted 11 digs and 14 assists, while Emily Ryerson finished with 21 assists.
After the intermission the third game was much more even throughout but the Sailfish were able to pull away in the middle of the game 19-13. Despite its poor second-game performance, Embry-Riddle still had fight left as they battled back to within two points at 24-22. However, PBA took advantage of three Eagle miscues, Warren recorded a service ace and Mitchell and Vieira put the hammer down with back-to-back kills to close out the match 30-22.
Embry-Riddle has a rare conference doubleheader on Saturday at 12 and 4 p.m. against Northwood (Fla.) and Edward Waters (Fla.), while Palm Beach Atlantic travels to Flagler (Fla.) for a 12 p.m. match.
