DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A second-half goal by Sean Gormley gave the Flagler College men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over sixth-ranked Embry-Riddle on Saturday. The Saints, in their first season of provisional membership in NCAA II improved to 7-3 with the win, while the Eagles drop to 5-3 on the year.
The Saints came out strong to start the first half, registering the first two shots of the match. But although the Eagles responded by out shooting the Saints 8-2 in the first half, they could not find the back of the net, resulting in a scoreless tie at the half time break.
Both teams had opportunities but neither team was able to capitalize until late in the second period. In the 78th minute, a bad pass by the Eagles in the middle of the park led to a shot by Andres Jaramillo which Ian Levine deftly put over the cross bar for a Flagler corner kick. Jaramillo's corner found Gormley whose shot bounced off an Eagle defender and into the net for the 1-0 win.
"Overall I was pleased with our performance" head coach David Gregson said. "It was an outstanding team performance and we got back doing the good things well. I couldn't have asked for more from my players. Sometimes you don't get the result, but over the course of a season, your luck tends to even out."
The Eagles return to conference play at 7 p.m. on Tuesday when they host Warner Southern at Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
