MIAMI, Fla. ? The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team captured the program's fifth straight Florida Sun Conference Title with a 2-1 win over St. Thomas at Bobcat Field on Tuesday. The Eagles posted a 6-3-1 conference record and closed out the regular season at 7-7-2 overall, while the Bobcats close out their campaign at 5-12-1 overall and 2-8 in league play.
The majority of the offense in the first half came from the Embry-Riddle squad who took 11 shots, including seven on goal, to the Bobcats' three. But St. Thomas got a solid performance from Diego Villegas, who made seven saves, four of which were from point blank range, resulting in a scoreless tie at the half.
The Eagles finally broke through in the 65th minute. Sam Litchfield won a 1-v-1 battle on the end line and got a cross into the six-yard box. A St. Thomas defender got to the ball first but was unable to control it and the loose ball fell to Joe Yoffe who calmly slotted home his ninth goal of the season to put the Eagles up 1-0.
The lead was short-lived as Jasen Labrada got by the Eagles' last defender and tucked the equalizer into the lower left corner in the 69th minute.
The Eagles seemed destined for their second overtime in as many matches when with just one minute remaining in regulation, Mike Scott was brought down on the left side of the field. Hugh Davey was on the receiving end of Carl Sheard's free kick and Davey volleyed home his first goal of the year to give the Eagles the win.
By winning the conference title, the Eagles will be the No. 1 seed in this weekend's NAIA Region XIV tournament being hosted by Savannah College of Art & Design at the SCAD Athletics in South Carolina. Pairings and game times will be announced later this week.
