No. 19 Embry-Riddle Registers Upset of No. 3 Mobile

OLATHE, Kan. ? The No. 19 Embry-Riddle men's soccer team continued its run at the 2007 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship with a 2-0 upset of the No. 3 Mobile in second round action on Thursday. The Eagles improved to 12-6-2 with their second upset of the national tournament, while the Rams, who were shutout for only the second time this season, ended their 2007 at 14-5-1.

Thursday's match was a defensive battle as both team combined for just seven shots on goal. Mobile outshot the Eagles 5-1 in the first half, but neither team was able to get by the other team's defense, resulting in a scoreless tie at the half.

The second half started similarly to the way the first half ended. The first crack in the Mobile defense came in the 61st minute when freshman Sam Litchfield was brought down inside the 18-yard box, resulting in an Eagle penalty kick. Joe Yoffe stepped up to the penalty spot and converted on his fourth penalty kick attempt of the season to give the Blue and Gold a one-goal lead.

After staving off a steady offensive attack by the Rams late in the game, the Eagle defense cleared the ball out to the half way line. Litchfield held off two defenders, spun and played the ball to AJ Barrett on the overlapping run. Barrett knocked the ball by one defender, which put him in a one-v-one situation with the keeper, and he calmly slotted home his seventh goal of the season to seal the win with just three minutes remaining.

The Eagles' last line of defense, goalkeeper Ian Levine, collected three saves en route to the Eagles' fifth shutout of the year.

The Eagles, who defeated the Rams 3-1 during the 2006 regular season, advance to Saturday's quarterfinal where they will face the winner of the Graceland/Concordia (Calif.) contest.
