DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team improved its record to 7-0 with a 92-78 win over Graceland (1-6) in the first round of the Daytona Mitsubishi Shootout on Friday.
Tyler DeBord led the way for the Eagles with 21 points and eight boards, while Denver Cobb added 20 points, 16 of which came in the first half.
Mike Malat paced the Graceland offense with 17 points in 35 minutes on the floor and Aundrae Williams tacked on 16 points. Kevin Potter came off the bench to score 14 points as the Yellow Jackets' bench contributed 35 points to the final tally.
The Eagles scored the first bucket of the night just nine seconds into the contest on a DeBord layup. But the Yellow Jackets had an answer and went on to take a 12-8 lead.
ERAU reclaimed the lead at the 15:56 mark and never looked back. Rocky Pierre (15 points)connected on three of four attempts from beyond the arc and Cobb went 4-5 from the field and 7-8 from the charity stripe to help the Eagles to a 55-39 lead at the half.
Eric Lorenzi (15 points) and DeBord put up 10 points apiece in the second half as the Eagles extended the lead to as much as 22 points with just over 10 minutes left in the contest. Graceland rallied behind 12 second-half points from Malat to close the gap to 14 points over the last minute and a half, making the final score 92-78.
The Eagles, who have won four Mitsubishi Shootout titles in seven tries, will take on Carroll (Mont.) in the championship game at 8 p.m. on Saturday. The Fighting Saints advanced after topping Brewton-Parker (Ga.) 69-61.
